CREDETAO - Applied research and technology
transfer projects

The Centre de recherche et de développement technologique agricole de l’Outaouais (CREDETAO - Outaouais Agricultural Technology Development and Research Center) carries out applied research and technology transfer projects adapted to the needs and realities of Outaouais agri-food companies.

Here are some of the achievements and publications:

Technico-economic and environmental efficiency: vegetative filtration strips and purification zones in cattle production

This project has the objective of improving the technical, economic and environmental efficiency of various types of vegetative filter strips with the use of an effective, profitable, and sustainable purification zone.

This agri-environmental project is going to allow the following:

  • to determine if the distances and surfaces required by the vegetative strip, as described in the Guide, can be reduced in size by using a purification zone considering the hydraulic, chemical and microbiological parameters;

  • to measure the evolution of the concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in the ground in the vegetative strip with and without the purification zone;

  • to estimate the agri-environmental parameters of a low-density paddock such as management of the enclosure and the agri-environmental record of manure management.

Ginseng production in a forested environment

The current project is aimed at establishing ginseng in a forest area in the Outaouais region to collect technical and economic data at five farms.

This type of production has aroused big interest among maple sugar and forestry producers in the region and it is definitely of interest for those wishing to diversify their sugar bush and woodlot activities.

Cold herbal teas

This project has the objective of establishing a processing plant in the Outaouais, and to implement, in an optimal and sustainable manner, an exclusive and value-added product from conventional production to third-level processing for regional, national and even export markets.

It aims to:
  • favour research and development stemming from medicinal plants for unique processed products and adapted to export requirements;

  • diversify non-traditional production;

  • arrange and create business partnerships to attract regional and extra-regional investment;

  • set up a structure for effective marketing and responding to export markets.

Regional agricultural incubator

This entrepreneurship project was essentially based on starting an agricultural business.

It answered a need to develop horticultural production and agri-food processing in the Outaouais and, in addition, it represents a structural project to develop the rural economy and entrepreneurship aimed at becoming established in agriculture.

Production of exotic vegetables

This project was aimed at experimenting with cropping, harvesting and packaging techniques for exotic vegetables targeted for ethnic markets, and for completing a study on retail marketing for all these new products.

This project had the goal of developing an expertise in the domain, and for favouring the introduction of these ethnic types of vegetable crops to answer the growing demand for this non-traditional type of production in an already rapidly growing market.

Given that the establishment of this kind of production possesses little prior or available data, this project allowed for the acquisition of knowledge on production possibilities, regional adaptability, the susceptibility to devastating diseases, and the yields and profitability of these vegetables. The trials were realized over a period of three years.

Apple trees in heavy ground

This project focused on developing and optimizing apple tree farming on clay soil. For this project, two farms were selected to plant apple trees on a hectare of land. The introduction of an orchard of semi-dwarf and dwarf apple trees in heavy soil was specifically selected to verify and to analyze the development of the production in the Outaouais region's climatic context.

This project allowed for an experiment in growing an apple crop in drained clay soil, to ensure a follow-up for establishing an orchard and to produce advisory materials to facilitate the technological transfer to other producers interested in the project.

Production of Yarrow (or Achillea) Milfoil Essential Oil

This project had the objective of establishing a commercial scale yarrow milfoil crop for the purpose of extracting essential oil. It allowed for the verification of the technical and economic aspects of crop production, and of the harvesting machinery using equipment that is normally for making haylage.

This project consisted of the plant propagation of the yarrow milfoil 55 cultivar throughout a network of participating farms, and is characterized by its high content of chamazulene. These plants were developed through the plant splicing technique and the essential oil is marketed in Europe in the aromatherapy sector.

Production of sweetened pearl millet for the purpose of ethanol processing - Pre-feasibility phases

The objective of this project was to develop the production of renewable energy on the farm using sweetened pearl millet with an end use for ethanol production.

Among other aspects, it consisted of:
  • verifying the adaptive capacity of pearl millet varieties in the regional environment by means of an experimental plot, and the suppression of nematodes for the purpose of good farm practices and for the industrial purpose of ethanol production;

  • analyze and estimate the technical feasibility of pearl millet production for ethanol production with profitable on-farm agronomic practices;

  • achieve financial, agronomic pre-feasibility and logistical analysis for on-farm processing.
Project completed / November 2004 (confidential documents)

Feasibility study to convert sheep wool into building insulation

This project had the objective to analyze another source for the utilization of sheep wool produced in the Outaouais in order to have a secondary value for this production, and for increasing producer profitability. To do it, a feasibility study was carried out concerning the use of the sheep wool as a raw material in making insulating wool for a building.

Greenhouse Organic Eggplant Production

The project had an unique element because it focused on a cropping method for greenhouse organic eggplant production in a Quebec context. In North America, greenhouse eggplant production is practically non-existent, in the conventional as well as the organic form.

During the three years of the experiment, four main objectives were targeted: find eggplant cultivars that could successful in Quebec, work out a technique for size and an applicable production schedule, draft a production guide and complete a marketing study for greenhouse organic eggplants.

Trial network of organic production of aromatic and medicinal plants

The objective of the network was to compile technical and economic data on the production of seven aromatic and medicinal plants produced by about fifteen farms over a period of three years. The participating farms should be putting into production 2000 m² annually.

Computerized technico-economic management tool for a cow-calf operation

This project consisted of elaborating a computerized technico-economic program for analyzing and calculating production costs for a cow-calf operation.

The technical and economic data on beef production was entered into the developed software. It created an individualized treatment for the farm and a diagnosis of the technical and economic efficiency of the operation. This diagnosis allowed for a comparison to be made with the average or normal Quebec values for cow-calf production, and served to present the evolution of the operation over time.

The proposed tool allows a farmer to be aware of the importance of agricultural management. Through the individual treatment of data, the software can often discover key points for improvement in the operation.

Country Guide to Petite Nation

This guide had the objective of promoting the region's agricultural businesses and to allow members to succeed at selling their products.

It also allowed tourists to discover the numerous local products from the region and from Papineau MRC.

It was disseminated in the form of a magazine listing the agricultural businesses in the region.

Interpretation trails for the Montfortains Monastery

This project was aimed at making the public aware of the area's forested and agricultural ecosystems, and to demonstrate the value of the agricultural and forestry professions. It's goal was to promote hiking while discovering fascinating points of interest, such as:

  • a panoramic view of the forest
  • numerous types of trees
  • Montfortains Fathers cave (set up in 1921)
  • natural ecosystems and their interaction with the cutting of the forest
  • production of organic aromatic and medicinal plants.

Buckingham's Old Market

The mission of Buckingham's Old Market was to allow producers and processors in the region to sell their products directly to consumers, together with various dynamic activities.

This project had the objective of creating an attractive visual identification for the sale counters, grouping interested producers together, easy access to the market for those completing the ornamental horticulture and market garden production at the Centre de formation professionnelle Seigneurie, and finally the integration of these sale counters as part of the agri-tourism tours in the Outaouais.
